This week, Leighton visited New College Durham to take part in the college’s ongoing recruitment awareness programme.

In order to empower students coming towards the end of their studies with the knowledge and skills required to further their employment prospects, the college was particularly keen to partner with Leighton in order to tap into our experience and knowledge of the digital services sector.

As Leighton’s Internal Recruiter, these type of events are a great opportunity to help potential Leighton recruits of the future understand more about us and how we operate. Accompanied by one of our Project Managers Elizabeth Hair and our Operations Manager Scott Williams, we ran two sessions over the course of the morning, one aimed at further education students on the Computing course and one aimed at students undertaking Higher Education in Computing, Business, Public Services and Sport Sciences.

While Scott gave the students an overview of our roster of clients and the projects we’re currently working on, I was particularly keen to take the students through the recruitment process at Leighton and the qualities and skills we look for in a potential candidate.

Elizabeth gave an insightful talk to the students about her career path and how she came to work in the technology sector. Regarding her own experience, Elizabeth said: "It was great to talk to the students about my journey, as I, like most students, had no career path in mind at college, and at the time you feel like you are the only one. The event was really positive and it was great to be involved. The students were very interested in emerging technologies that they should be looking into - aiming to progress their careers by developing skills and experience that will soon become vital to businesses.

Following on from our visit to New College Durham, Leighton will be working closely with the college and their students to offer them further opportunities, knowledge and support. In the near future, our SEO Specialist Dan Smith will be visiting the college to give the students advice on how SEO and Social Media can be used in relation to their potential career paths.
