This year we were delighted to be a headline sponsor for TechNExt 2025 alongside Sage and Kim McGuinness – North East Mayor. The five-day event saw over 3,000 people come together to celebrate our sector and showcase the excellent work taking place right here in our region.
From the talks that took place on the Main Stage that offered innovation, inspiration and insight, to the Industry Dinner our team thoroughly enjoyed meeting and speaking to people from across the sector.
Steve Morland – our CTO – led a session at the Data & AI Hub focusing on the where, what and how of building a data strategy, uncovering the importance of defining key data capabilities, the difference between databases, data lakes and data warehouses and how to build the right architecture. Reflecting on his session, he said: “Events like TechNExt show just how strong the North East tech community is. We had some really meaningful discussions about complexity around data strategy and are continuing the conversations with those who are facing these challenges every day.”

Jo Larby – our Accessibility Community Lead – delivered a lightening talk on imposter syndrome and overcoming bias in tech at Tech Talent Live in Sunderland, the North East's largest digital and tech careers fair.
Speaking on the event, she said: “The talk I delivered focused on challenges faced in the tech sector, including imposter syndrome and bias, and explored ways to build confidence. The topics discussed are important to me, having faced these in the past. It was great to hear from many of the audience members that the content resonated with them and provided them with reassurance that the industry is still for them.”

Rounding off the week our CEO, James Bunting was joined by Leighton Co-Founder, Chris Wilds as they shared learnings from over 25 years in tech at the Tech Start Up Hub in Durham. Speaking on the festival James said: “TechNExt is a brilliant example of what happens when you create a space for the community to come together. It’s not just about showing what we’ve built – it’s about inspiring what’s next.”
A huge thank you to everyone who made it such a fantastic week, including the teams from Sunderland Software City, Dynamo North East and Beacon House Events. And of course, all our Leighton colleagues who contributed to making the week a success.
